Crook Street Wetlands 2007

This year, I am going to try more of a journal approach. Post the pictures as I sort through them on a weekly (or thereabouts) basis instead of trying to do it all at the end of the season. The journal approach will give more information on a visit basis.

April 8, 2007. This should have been the beginning of the ode season. I have seen Green Darners breeding at this time in other years. But instead, it is Easter Sunday, and it has been below freezing and snowed for the better part of the week. This is a view that I frequently shoot for reference as to water level, etc. This is the first time I have shot it with an ice cover!

  • April 8, 2007. As seen in former years, geese often use muskrat mounds as nest sites. This poor girl is trying to incubate her eggs in the snow. It will be interesting to see the effects of this unseasonable weather on the various populations in the wetlands.
  • April 4, 2007. This is an ephemeral stream in the woods I frequently shoot to illustrate wetness or dryness. Today it was full but with ice. Last year at this time, the Spring Beauties were starting.
  • April 14, 2007. One week later, similar shot. At least the ice and snow are gone! It was still pretty ugly, gray, 44 degrees and raw. No insect life at all visible.

  • April 14, 2007. Egrets
  • April 14, 2007. Ready to pop.
  • April 21, 2007. Finally the weather has warmed up and it is like Spring! 65 degrees, very calm and clear. Lovely. No ode activity. The Green Darners probably went back down south after last week. This is now at least one week and possibly two weeks late. Very little insect activity at all. The ephemerals were blooming nicely in the woods. These trout lilies are being visited by a Bee Fly, Bombylius major. I just discovered these, with the help of a Bugguide ID, and now I seem to see them all over. There were quite a few in the trout lilies.
  • May 20,2007. Very little ode activity, due to the cool temperature, and brisk cold winds. The geese have hatched their goslings, and are in the "herding them" stage. Usually they get tucked in between several adults.
  • May 20, 2007. One of the few dragons I saw. There were two baskettails in the sunny patches in the wooded area and this dot-tailed whiteface sunning itself. One darner hunting over the field. Too much wind for flying.
  • May 20, 1007. The first Tiger Swallowtail of the season. There were also some Duskywings, who insisted that I photograph them, too. And one small Spring Azure.
  • May 28,2007. Not sure what kind of skipper, Maybe Zabulon?
  • May 28, 2007. Same type of skipper, similar area. There were many of these that day.
  • May 28, 2007. Mourning Cloaks are usually found in the same sunny spots in the woods. They are so consistent, you have to remind yourself they are not the same ones as last year.
  • May 28, 2007. Orange Bluets tandem.
  • June 2, 2007. Unicorn clubtail in obelisk position. Since moving in two years ago, they have become very common this year.
  • June 2, 2007. Female Eastern Amberwing.
  • June 2, 2007. Hover fly on some asters.
  • June 2, 2007. Blue Tipped Dancer Female.
  • June 2, 2007. Blue Fronted Dancer female.
